Miracles

Reader,

I love being a coach. And I value being coached by a coach.

One of my coaches shared with me *Littlewood's Law of Miracles...* 💫

Littlewood was a famous mathematician at Cambridge University who defined a miracle as a hugely significant event with a one-in-a-million probability of occurring.

Makes sense, right?

Littlewood's Law of Miracles states that in a normal person's life, miracles occur at a rate of roughly one per month.

How is that possible, you ask?

Well, we see and hear things at a rate of about one per second.

If we are actively engaged for eight hours a day, that's about thirty thousand events a day. Or about a million a month.

So, if the chance of a miracle is about one in a million, we can expect an average of one miracle every month...

So-called miracles aren't necessarily supernatural or extraordinary.

When you consider how many things happen in your life daily, it’s statistically likely that something wildly improbable will happen every so often.

[My list is long: Getting and surviving cancer being at the top of the list followed by having twins naturally without IVF]

Ask yourself, ask your kids, ask your closest besties:

"What's a miracle that happened for you today?

After all, if you don't look for miracles, you'll never find them.... 😉

Expectation from effort. Look for where entitlement creeps in.

Reader, I caught myself in a spiral. I’m writing this post on Saturday (yesterday if you are reading this on Sunday). I like to have a few Sunday Sunshines written a week or two ahead, but I’ve let it slip. Lots going on: Workshops, a team off-site, writing a keynote, coaching hours, and guesting on a podcast ----> cue that nagging voice: Why is this so hard? Shouldn’t writing be easier by now? Shouldn't there be more to show for all this effort? This put me into a spiral of expectation:...

A new way of being. Create it by becoming more aware by pausing to reflect. It's transformative. Here's a 5-minute practice.

Reader, My first week as Chief Revenue Officer at Fast Company included representing the brand at ‘The Magazine of the Year’ awards, standing at the podium before 500 industry peers—including a former boss who had fired me. The voices in my head warned that these ‘not-so-friendly’ peers would judge my ability to lead this prestigious business innovation media brand. ...The brand is cool. I am not cool... “And the award goes to…” I walked carefully to the stage, praying not to trip. Climbed...

Reader, "Your vibe is your value." This struck a chord when Erin King shared it on the Earn Your Happy podcast. I lived the opposite for years. As a media CRO, I was the poster child for powering through: Closing magazine issues, managing ad layouts, filling last-minute holes Juggling a dozen client meetings with tricky personalities Leading 1:1s and team meetings to inspire and set expectations Forecasting through market pressure Hosting industry fireside chats Fighting a never-ending battle...
