I AM Affirmations

Reader,

🎧🎧 Listen to Sunday Sunshine HERE 🎧🎧

This is a best of Sunday Sunshine.

I am my word.

I am driven.

I am like no one else.

I am boldly creating even when uncertain.

I am in pursuit of an extraordinary life.

I had an exceptional second quarter. When I evaluated the quarter, I couldn't put my finger on anything exceptional that I'd done to make it exceptional.

While I rarely go back and read my journal, I was curious about what I was thinking and writing at the time to give me insight into my growth that I couldn't find in my calendar, events I'd attended or new initiatives created.

What I saw in my morning journal writing was a lot of work on organizing my thoughts, but also on those pages were daily entries of ‘I Am’ statements.

This was a new practice I began incorporating at the start of the quarter after reading the book The Ultimate Coach.

Who you are being is everything.

'I Am' statements are an expression of that.

Writing them has me taking ownership of who I am being and how I'm envisioning my future. My 'I Am's' are reinforcers of my identity and the behaviors that go with them. They are who I am today. They express who I want to be.

They are not untrue, but they are intentionally bold.

The Ultimate Coach opens with Coach Steve Hardison offering these writing prompts for the reader to answer before reading another page.

Who would I need to BE to create a level of confidence that is remarkable?
Who would I need to BE to be at peace with who I am?
Who would I need to BE to be a more loving person?
Who would I need to BE to be fully in love with myself and my life?
Who would I need to BE to live the most extraordinary life I can live?

At the beginning of the quarter, I answered these questions and believe with 100% certainty that writing my 'I Am' statements was the source, the difference, and the energy that elevated my performance.

I was training my brain with the conviction of who I want to be.

My 'I Am' statements helped me build belief in myself and my work, which elevated how I was showing up personally and professionally.

I wrote them daily in my journal. The art and science of journaling is a proven performance enhancer when done consistently and with intention. Just ask Oprah, Arianna Huffington, and Warren Buffet, who all journal.

Some of you may be thinking: I can't. Not me. I don't have time. But if billionaires and multi-millionaires are believers and doers, why not you? I asked myself this very question when I originally resisted journaling.

You can retrain your brain in less than 10 minutes a day.

When I journal,

I see with more clarity.

I see what I couldn’t see before.

New discoveries that have me understanding and learning.

New thoughts surface that wouldn't have if I hadn’t put pen to paper.

This is how you begin to manage your mind, which is an instrumental component to personal success.

Journaling helps me navigate energetic conversations ahead of time.

As I write each day, things emerge out of nowhere. Thoughts magically find their way on the page without much thought.

You may be thinking that all you'll write about will be negative or complaining. Think about it - better there, where you can leave it on the page rather than carrying negative energy into your day.

Writing daily helps you unload the baggage, make sense of it, and focus on what you want to create and who you want to become.

You will find that the days you skip journaling will be the days when you need it most.

Moving from a messy mind to a managed mind -- at least closer to it. That’s retraining the brain to serve you.

For me, the pen to paper freehand in a notebook is what frees my mind to unload and create. I don't get the same impact when I'm typing.

That's my practice. Find the way that is feels right to you.

Prayer

Meditation

Breathing

Walking

Music

The modality doesn't matter as much as putting a process in place.

Start your I Am practice today! Write consistently and watch what transforms in 30 days.

The stories, places, and life you'll create await on the page—your space where thoughts become clear and your dreams take form.

The difference between reacting and responding is a life changing power

Reader, 🎧🎧 Listen to Sunday Sunshine HERE 🎧🎧 I remember at Fast Company in the midst of a potentially transformative new digital initiative roll-out, I was at the end of my rope. Our Editor & Chief was relentless: Every email he sent was push back. His numbers were incorrect, he was missing the context and next steps were never clear. He drove me crazy with each and every interaction. Has that every happened to you? Frustration rises. And then... Your fingers hit the keyboard. You type fast,...

What getting fired at 13 taught me about leadership

Reader, 🎧🎧 Listen to Sunday Sunshine HERE 🎧🎧 Fun fact: I was a ball girl at The U.S. Open tennis tournament. I was 13 years old, commuting two hours by bus, subway, and on foot to Flushing Meadows for my very first day. I arrived in the official U.S. Open ball girl uniform [sneakers included!]—more concerned about how I looked than how I’d perform. But super nervous working in the house of Arthur Ashe. After orientation, I was handed a stack of tennis ball containers and sent running under...
